Email Client
The program that checks your email, downloads and displays it for you.
Microsoft's Outlook 2003 is my recommendation.
Outlook is part of Microsoft Office. It actually does a lot more than handle your email, but you can organize your mail into folders, have selected email placed into folders automatically, when it arrives at your computer. It will try determine what is Spam and place Spam into a Junk folder. It will still be available to you, so to begin with you check the Junk folder and see how well Outlook is doing. You can set it up so that it allows you to confirm that it is Junk and then finally delete it.
- Outlook Express is a part of Windows so you should already have it. I like it. It is simple to use. It is easy to setup. Another thing that I like about Outlook Express is that it allows you to access the source code of html email that you are composing which lets you see the code and the document that the code produces..
- Mozilla ThunderBird is free, open-source e-mail client. It has several features to help keep Spam within control and to help maintain your privacy. Download Mozilla Thunderbird Version 1.5
Autoresponders
AWeber - One of the oldest and most respected autoresponder services. Your subscriber information and messages reside on their
servers. The mail that you send is sent through their e-mail servers and NOT
through your ISP's email servers. Monthly fees apply. Try it risk free.
GetResponse - Similar to AWeber in use and design. Monthly fees apply.

Both of the above services has a requirement you might not like. Since the mail is sent from their servers they are at risk of getting accused of spamming if their user (you) send to addresses for which you do NOT have permission to send commercial email. For that reason, these types of services usually require that you send the first message to your subscribers asking them to confirm that they want to receive the email.
The problem is that with each step of asking a list of subscribers to confirm that they want or they they continue to want to receive email from you- you will lose some of your subscribers. Some will not get the email or will not open and read it. It might end up in a junk mail folder and be deleted without ever being seen.
New - Email Marketing Assistant the free
version is the best that I know of as of October, 2006.
It can run on most inexpensive Linux hosting accounts which can
cost less than $5/month.

See how it works: signup to this mailing list, confirm your email address and get the link to an E-book that gives you step by step instructions (with screenshots) so you can setup your own Free Autoresponder. You will need a hosting account, (most accounts will be able to run this script for you).
Email Marketing Assistant Pro is the paid version of the above. More features, but $97, But for that price they will install it for you for FREE.
Use this on your hosting accounts webserver. Pay for it once and pay No monthly fees.
AutoResponse Plus - This is what I am using now. This is a program that runs from your webserver. So you must have a hosting account on which to install it. You can install or they will install it for you. I did the installation and got it setup without a problem. It has been running for about a year now with no problems. Your subscriber information and the messages reside on the webserver. You can make a backup of your autoresponder information to your own computer for peace of mind. You pay for the software once and there are no monthly fees. Your limits are the limits of your webserver.
They have recently added a way of combining RSS (Really Simple Syndication) with their autoresponder. This allows you to offer both to potential subscribers. They can receive information from you with their regular email or they can get it through an RSS feed. (What is RSS?)
